Swimming pool chemicals include disinfectants and sanitizers that help control the growth of algae and bacteria in pool water. These chemicals may also be used in whirlpools, hot tubs, wading pools, and spas.
Although a number of different chemicals are used in these products, chlorine is the most common. Chlorinating agents present in disinfectants and sanitizers release chlorine when they are dissolved in water. In large pools, maintenance may be done by professionals using chlorine gas.
Chlorine-based disinfectants are referred to as liquid chlorine, chlorinating liquid, or dry chlorine. Dry chlorine comes in granular or tablet form while liquid chlorine and chlorinating liquid are solutions of chlorine in water.
